Abstract

This paper aims to extend the container architectural knowledge further while assessing if this relatively new type of architecture can be considered as a sustainable construction method. It offers and overview about the main advantage and disadvantages about this kind of architecture showing real examples and analysing them in a social, economical and environmental sustainable dimension. The thermal performance of the containers looks at the heating energy consumption of the containers tanking into consideration a set of variables of interest namely location, orientation and number of windows. Results are compared with UK benchmarks for dwellings in order to assess if containers can comply with minimum energy consumption as well as amount of CO2 emissions.
